Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is a composite board with wood fiber as the main raw material, by adding adhesives and forming under high temperature and pressure. As an important type of engineered wood board, MDF has been widely used in furniture manufacturing, architectural decoration and interior design
MDF is popular for its good mechanical properties and stability. Its density, as well as the proportion of adhesives used, affect the physical properties of the final product, such as the strength, hardness and water absorption of the sheet34. To enhance its performance, researchers often add nanomaterials, such as zinc oxide and graphene oxide, to MDF to improve its physical and mechanical properties
MDF has excellent machinability and can be easily sawn, drilled and finished. This makes it widely used in furniture manufacturing and decoration. Recent studies have also explored its potential applications in electromagnetic shielding and heavy metal adsorption. In addition, based on environmental and sustainability considerations, some studies have explored the use of agricultural waste such as bagasse and pineapple leaf fiber in MDF production to achieve resource reuse
Do you know the MDF production step? and what machines are required for making MDF?
<1> Raw materials Prepare:
Raw materials mainly include wood fibers, adhesives and additives. Wood fiber is usually derived from hardwood or mixed wood, and sometimes from agricultural by-products such as straw and wheat straw. In the interest of environmental protection and sustainability, more and more research has explored the use of bamboo fiber, industrial hemp, and various agricultural by-products as alternative raw materials
<2> Fiber prepare:
The treatment of wood mainly involves slicing, cooking and fibrosis. The wood chips are softened by pyrolysis and cooking, and then made into fibers by mechanical methods. The optimization of cooking conditions, such as time and temperature, can significantly affect the quality and uniformity of the fiber
<3> Drying and Adhesive mixing:
Fiber drying is done to remove excess water and ensure stability in subsequent production. The dried fibers are mixed with adhesives (such as urea-formaldehyde resin, melamine-formaldehyde resin, etc.) and other additives (such as limestone powder, activated carbon, etc.) to enhance the mechanical properties and environmental characteristics of the sheet
<4> Forming and Pre-pressing:
The evenly mixed fiber is evenly spread on the conveyor belt through the automatic equipment to form a uniform fiber blanket. The pre-pressing stage compacts these fiber blankets initially, reducing bubbles and defects during subsequent hot pressing. The parameters of this step (such as humidity, compaction speed) significantly affect the density distribution and internal bonding strength of the final product
<5> Hot pressing:
Hot pressing is one of the most critical steps in MDF production. Under high temperature and pressure conditions, the fiber and adhesive begin to cross-link reaction, forming a dense and uniform sheet. Parameter optimization such as temperature, pressure and pressing time has an important effect on the physical and mechanical properties of MDF. In order to improve energy efficiency and optimize production, researchers are also constantly improving hot pressing techniques and equipment
Now for MDF production, it mainly have two types Hot press, one is Multi-opening hot press, it is suitable for smaller capacity, another one is Continuous press which is suitable for bigger production capacity, and continuous press can keep more balance thickness because it is uninterrupted.
<6> Post treatment and Surface treatment:
After hot pressing, MDF usually requires cutting, sanding, and surface treatment (such as laminating and coating treatment) to achieve specific dimensions and surface quality requirements. The parameters of the sanding process and the service life of the sanding belt will significantly affect the surface roughness and aesthetics of the sheet. The surface coating can enhance the physical properties of the plate and improve its durability
<7> Quality control and environmental testing:
In order to ensure product quality, every key part of the production process requires strict quality control. Some advanced techniques such as near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) analysis have been used to monitor in real time the reaction process of adhesives and the properties of sheets during hot press18. In addition, in order to meet environmental requirements, the formaldehyde emission and other volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of the sheet also need to be tested
The production process of MDF involves multiple processes, each of which is continuously optimized to improve the performance and environmental characteristics of the board. The development of advanced processes and new materials provides a broad space for the use of MDF in more application fields
We have exported many machines to different countries, and got good feedback.
