![]() | Do you know what is OSB (Oriented Strand Board)? |
Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is an engineered wood product made of oriented wood chips (shavings) and resin adhesives. It is characterized by high strength and good stability. It is often used in building structures, packaging, furniture and other fields. Common size specifications 1. Thickness Common thickness: 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm, 25mm, etc. Special thickness: can be customized according to needs (such as 30mm or more for heavy structures) 2. Format size (length × width) International general size: 1220mm × 2440mm (4 feet × 8 feet, most commonly used). Other specifications: 1200mm × 2400mm (common in Europe) 1250mm × 2500mm (some manufacturers) Large size panels: such as 1220mm × 2750mm, 1220mm × 3000mm (for special projects) 3. Size selection recommendations Wall/roof structure: commonly used 12mm~18mm thickness, 1220×2440mm format. Floor base: recommended 18mm~25mm thickness, moisture-proof grade required (such as OSB/3). Packaging/furniture: 6mm~12mm thin plate, flexible cutting. Characteristics of Oriented Strand Board - High structural strength: wood chips are arranged in layers (vertical on the surface, horizontal on the core), and the bending and shearing resistance is better than that of ordinary particle board. - Moisture resistance: some OSBs are treated with moisture resistance (such as OSB/3 and OSB/4 grades) and can be used in humid environments. - Environmental protection: fast-growing wood or recycled wood is used, and the glue is usually environmentally friendly resin (such as phenolic or MDI glue). - Economical and practical: the price is lower than plywood, but the performance is similar. |
![]() | The Production process of OSB panel |
The production process of OSB involves multiple precise steps from wood processing to finished product packaging, including wood shavings preparation, drying, gluing, directional paving, hot pressing, cutting, etc. Its core advantage lies in the high strength brought by the directional structure, which is suitable for construction, packaging and furniture manufacturing. Different grades of OSB (such as OSB/3 and OSB/4) achieve differentiated performance by adjusting adhesives and process parameters. Now i will show you the OSB production steps one by one in details |
1 | Raw Materials -Wood Strands |
Peeling machine with silo
For making OSB, usually choose the fast grow wood like Pine, Poplar, spruce, some factory will mix with hardwood to increase OSB strength.
By the Wood peeling machine to peel wood to be wood strands /flakes (Length 50-100mm, width 10-30mm, thickness 0.5-0.8mm). the peeled shavings and strands will be conveyed to the silo
2 | Drying process -Drum Dryer |
Dryer
By rotary dryer or air dryer to drying the wood strands, drying temperature usually between 200~300℃. After drying, the shavings moisture will be 2%-4%, the moisture should not too high or too low, all not good for the quality
3 | Resin applying |
Resin applying system
<1> Common Adhesive types
- PF (Phenolic resin): Strong water resistance for OSB/3, OSB/4 (outdoor grade)
- MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate): No formaldehyde, environmental protection, but the cost is higher
- UF(Urea-formaldehyde): For OSB/1, OSB/2 (dry environment)
<2> Resin apply method:
- Glue spraying system: the shavings enter the mixer, and the glue is evenly sprayed through the high-pressure nozzle (the glue content is about 4%~8%).
- Additives: Paraffin wax (water repellent) or curing agent may be added to improve performance
4 | Slab forming line |
Slab forming
Directional paving
Surface shavings: arranged along the length direction of the plate (longitudinal) to improve bending strength.
Core layer shavings: horizontal or random arrangement, improve the internal bonding force.
Equipment: The use of mechanical laying machine or air flow laying machine, forming a 3~5 layer structure.
5 | Multi-rolls Continuous Pre-press |
Pre-press
For pre-pressing the loose wood strands before Hot press, ensure the slab density uniform, structure stability and improve hot press efficiency.
Preliminary compaction: Compact the loosen slab to be 50%-70% of required thickness (For example from 100mm to be 40-50mm)
Venting and setting: remove air from slab
6 | Multi-Daylights Hot press |
Hot press
Type of hot press: multi-layer hot press (8~24 layers) or continuous flat press (CP line).
Temperature: 180~220℃ (phenolic resin needs high temperature curing).
Pressure: 3~5MPa (high pressure to fully penetrate the glue).
Time: Adjust according to the thickness (such as about 3 to 5 minutes for an 18mm plate).
Target density: usually 600~700kg/m³ (high density OSB is more robust)
After hot pressing, the plate enters the cooling rack and cools to below 50 ° C to prevent deformation.
7 | Edge cutting and Sanding |
Cutting and Sanding
Cutting: Use a crosssaw to cut to a standard size (e.g. 1220×2440mm).
Sanding (optional) : Some OSB require surface sanding to improve flatness
The test quality and packing OSB, the whole production process finish
