Do you know how to make Chipboard? what is the chipboard production step?
This article will show you the chipboard production step by step
Rotary dryer
Mat forming
Multi-opening hot press
Wood chipper
The production of particleboard (also known as particle board) is a multi-step industrial process, mainly made from wood or wood fiber materials (such as branches, sawdust, recycled wood, etc.) through processing, gluing, hot pressing and other techniques
1. Raw material preparation
Wood selection: Fast-growing wood (such as poplar, pine, and eucalyptus) or wood processing residues (such as sawdust, wood shavings, and offcuts) are usually used.
Crushing treatment: Raw materials are processed into wood shavings of certain specifications (flake, granular or fibrous) through chippers, planers or hammer crushers.
Screening and classification: The wood shavings are graded by size through a vibrating screen. Fine wood shavings are used for the surface layer (to ensure a smooth surface), and coarse wood shavings are used for the core layer (to enhance strength).
2. Drying
Wet wood shavings need to be dried through a dryer (such as a drum dryer) to reduce the moisture content to 3%-5%, to prevent the formation of bubbles or poor bonding during hot pressing
3. Glue application and mixing
Adhesive selection: Commonly used adhesives include urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive (UF), phenolic resin adhesive (PF), or eco-friendly adhesives (such as MDI adhesive).
Mixing method: Use a mixer to evenly mix the wood shavings with the adhesive. The amount of adhesive should account for approximately 8% to 12% of the weight of the dry wood shavings.
Additives: Water repellents (paraffin), flame retardants or fungicides, etc. may be added
4. Paving and shaping
The glued wood shavings are laid layer by layer using a mechanical laying machine.
Surface layer: Fine wood shavings are spread on both the upper and lower sides to ensure a smooth surface.
Core layer: Coarse wood shavings are laid in the middle to enhance the strength of the board.
The loose layer of wood shavings after paving is called a "slab"
5. Pre-pressing and hot pressing
Pre-pressing: The slab is initially compacted by a cold press to reduce its thickness and facilitate transportation.
Hot pressing
The slab is sent into the multi-layer hot press (temperature 180-220℃, pressure 2-5 MPa).
The hot pressing time is adjusted according to the thickness (usually 0.3-0.5 minutes per millimeter) to allow the adhesive to cure and form
Cooling: After hot pressing, the sheet is cooled by a cooling frame to stabilize the internal stress
7. Post-processing
Trimming: Cut into standard sizes (such as 1220×2440mm).
Sanding: Surface polishing to enhance flatness.
Quality inspection: Test density, strength, formaldehyde emission (such as E0, E1 standards), etc
Key quality control points
Particle shape: Uniform in size, affecting the strength and surface quality of the board.
Bonding performance: The amount of adhesive used and the degree of curing determine the water resistance and environmental friendliness.
Hot pressing parameters: temperature, pressure and time need to be precisely controlled to avoid delamination or overpressure
